“Choreographic Territories – New Paths for the Avant-garde” 2019 project has begun its tour

Sep 18, 2018

The Choreographic Territories - New Paths for the Avant-garde 2019 project, co-organized by the Institute of Music and Dance, has begun its international tour.

On 8 September, Poznań (Poland) hosted the premiere of the performance Yanka Rudzka Project: Polyphony, which opened the cycle Choreographic Territories: New Paths for the Avant-garde, which covers four outstanding Polish-born dancers and choreographers: Bronislava Nijinska, Maria Rambert, Pola Nireńska, and Yanka Rudzka. Choreographic Territories is organised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in collaboration with the Institute of Music and Dance, the Centre for Culture in Lublin, and the Art Stations Foundation in Poznań, along with partners from Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, and Armenia. The project is implemented within the frame of the POLSKA 100 programme, which celebrates the centenary of Polish independence. The Poznań premiere initiated this year’s dance cycle of dance piece presentations held in Poznań, Minsk, Dnipro, Tbilisi, Yerevan, and Kiev from 8 September through 3 October 2018, as part of Choreographic Territories. Apart from the Yanka Rudzka Project: Polyphony, the cycle will also feature Bataille and the Dawn of New Days by Sławek Krawczyński and Anna Godowska, Total by Paweł Sakowicz, Stalking Paradise by the Lublin Dance Theatre, and Welcome/Witajcie by Aurora Lubos.

Choreographic Territories: New Paths for the Avant-garde is a multiannual project presenting Polish contemporary dance featuring some of the best dance artists, pedagogues, showcased within the frame of the Polish Dance Platform 2017. Spanning the period of 2017-2021, the project features presentations, workshops, meetings and debates hosted by the most active contemporary dance centres in Central and Eastern Europe, including Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia, and Bulgaria. The piece is a follow-up to the 2016 programme Choreographic Territories, whose idea has been expanded to include initiatives presenting the outstanding 20th century Polish-born dance avant-garde women artists.

The project has featured a special publication (released in 2017), along with new international choreographic ventures covering the lives and oeuvres of the fascinating figures of Pola Nireńska, Bronislava Nijinska, Mary Rambert, and Yanka Rudzka. Much like in the 1920s and 1930s, Polish artists today can inspire the contemporary understanding of choreography in other countries. The programme intends to return to the intercultural exchange model based on actual collaboration with local dance milieus, while emphasising the strong current (and past) presence of women choreographers and dancers in the development of Polish dance.

The Choreographic Territories: New Paths for the Avant-garde programme has been developed as part of the international cultural programme coordinated by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, implemented within the frame of the Multiannual Programme NIEPODLEGŁA 2017–2021. Financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the Multiannual Programme NIEPODLEGŁA 2017-2021. PROGRAMME Partners: Institute of Music and Dance, East European Performing Arts Platform, Centre for Culture in Lublin, Old Brewery New Dance /Art Stations Foundation. In 2019, the Programme will produce a new competition-based dance piece showcasing the life and oeuvre of Pola Nireńska.

The Choreographic Territories project has been developed as part of the international cultural programme coordinated by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, implemented within the frame of the Multiannual Programme NIEPODLEGŁA 2017–2021.

The goal of IAM’s cultural programme is to bolster the image of Poland as a country of rich heritage and a burgeoning, past-contemporary culture infused with the past, with vital contributions to the common European identity. The programme showcases the continuity of Polish cultural traditions while also emphasizing the country’s incessant strive for modernity and its capacity for fostering contemporary Polish culture firmly set in international contexts. On the centenary of the regaining of Polish independence, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute hopes to present international audiences with the best of the past hundred years of Polish culture. An extensive framework of cultural events also aims to strengthen Poland’s ties with the countries of Central Europe, which have participated in the core initiatives implemented by the Institute.
