Mar 29, 2018

A ‘Springtime’ hurdy-gurdy, wooden musical toys, a fujara trójotworowa (three-holed recorder), a gajdy istebniańskie (Istebna bagpipe) and a burczybas (friction drum with a cord) – all of these featured prominently in our workshops of folk instrument making organised in 2017, highlights of which can be watched on our YouTube channel.

You are welcome to check out our projects dedicated to folk instruments and sound tools, and to watch a documentary showing workshops co-organised by the Institute of Music and Dance, as part of the programme’s edition completed in 2017.

The sixth edition of the ‘Master School of Folk Instrument Makers’ programme included the following workshops:

Constructing a three-holed recorder (fujara trójotworowa) (a copy of the original instrument kept in the Muzeum Tatrzańskie / Tatra Museum in Zakopane) with master craftsman Krzysztof Siuty and his pupil Mateusz Etynkowski [1 February – 15 August 2017; Zakopane]

Constructing an Istebna bagpipe (gajdy istebniańskie) with master craftsman Zbigniew Wałach and his pupil Piotr Pańczyk [1 April – 1 October 2017; Istebna]

Constructing wooden musical toys (a small wooden drum with a handle, a hollowed rattle, whistles, a clapper, a croaker, a cog rattle) with master craftsman Jan Puk and his pupil Witold Roy Zalewski [1 May – 30 September 2017; Trześnia, Gorzyce Commune]

Constructing a ‘Springtime’ hurdy-gurdy with master craftsman Lucjan Kościółek and Magdalena Filim-Kościółek [16 May – 15 June 2017; Krasne, Podkarpackie Voivodeship]

Workshops on the construction of a friction drum with a cord (burczybas) with master craftsman Tadeusz Makowski organised by the Communal Centre of Culture, Sport and Recreation in Chmielno [20 February – 28 April 2017; Chmielno]

The 2017 edition of the programme offered a total of about 500 hours of individual and group workshops, in which 14 students could take part. 14 instruments were constructed.

Workshop videos can be found under the bookmark resources and on the youtube IMITPolska channel. More information about the projects developed during individual workshops can also be accessed in resources.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the participants of the programme for preparing the workshop documentation and enabling us to use it. Special thanks are also addressed to the master craftsmen for their invaluable instructions.

Initiated by the Institute of Music and Dance in 2012, the programme is focused on teaching and popularising traditional folk instrument making skills, laying the foundations for a regional instrument making market to satisfy the needs of folk musicians and ensembles, and promoting the disappearing job, and the native traditional culture in a broader sense, amongst young people. The programme is equally addressed to the institutions with professional approach to the cultivation of tradition and to the individuals who wish to learn more about the method of transmitting the skills between a master craftsman and his pupil. In both types of workshops, institutional and individual, experienced craftsmen are given the opportunity to display their practical and theoretical expertise, and to pass it on to the younger generation.
