WOMEX 2017 in Katowice

Oct 23, 2017

The biggest world music fair in the world begins in Katowice on 24 October. The event will be held in Poland for the first time ever. The Institute of Music and Dance (IMiT) – along with its partners – has prepared several attractions for the foreign guests.

On the eve of the fair, the guests will be invited to enjoy studio visits at the Oskar Kolberg Museum in Przysucha (Muzeum im. O. Kolberga) and the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments in Szydłowiec (Muzeum Ludowych Instrumentów Muzycznych). The day will conclude with a special ‘Dancing Night’ featuring folk ensembles led by Wiesław Zielonka from Broniów and Jan Adamczyk from Budki. Polish traditional dances will be introduced by Piotr Zgorzelski.

During the fair itself, to be held on the premises of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) in Katowice between 25 and 29 October, the Institute will organise another edition of ‘Krytyka muzyczna 2.0’ (‘Music Criticism 2.0’). The programme’s themes this year will include traditional music and folk music. The lectures will be given by Dr Łukasz Smoluch from the Oskar Kolberg Institute and Ewelina Grygier from the Art Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). As a result of a competition procedure, the programme has accepted 4 participants who will have an opportunity to enjoy free access to all the events taking place at WOMEX, and their reports will be published in Pismo folkowe, a specialist folklore magazine.

In cooperation with the editors of Folk24.pl, the Institute has managed to update the biographic entries of almost 100 Polish folk music ensembles. An English version will also be available at www.folk24.pl

Another event, the Kato Connections Stage partly organised by the IMiT, will feature such groups as Maniucha&Ksawery, Hańba! and Trio Woźniak/Wachowiak/Kinaszewska (WoWaKin) in a series of concerts scheduled for 26 – 28 October.

All these attractions will be provided by the Institute of Music and Dance with the cooperation of the Katowice City of Gardens – Institution of Culture (Katowice Miasto Ogrodów – Instytucja Kultury im. Krystyny Bochenek).
